MAGDALEN is a fictional exploration of the women and children who passed through the Magdalene Laundries as slave laborers to orders of nuns in mid twentieth century Ireland, and the complicity of the church and society that tried to keep their stories hidden.

What most people are shocked to learn, is that the last of these institutions did not shut down in Ireland until 1996. After 1922, the Magdalene Laundries were operated by four religious orders (The Sisters of Mercy, The Sisters of Our Lady of Charity, the Sisters of Charity, and the Good Shepherd Sisters) in ten different locations around Ireland (click here for a map).
